  4. claims of sovereignty (Lombard had been
  5. conquered by Charlemagne in 774). Supported
  6. by Milan and Pope Alexander III (1105-81), it
  7. defeated Frederick I Barbarossa at Legnano in
  8. N Italy 1179 and effectively resisted Otto IV
  9. (1175-1218) and Frederick II, becoming the
  10. most powerful champion of the Guelph cause.
  11. Internal rivalries led to its dissolution in
  12. 1250.
